Hello World! This is a short introduction to spreadsheets. When you start Excel. You will select a blank worksheet. And you'll see this grid. Rows with numbers. And columns with letters. And you can create as many columns as you want when you get to Z the next column is a AA than AB and so on. And each of these Intersection of a row and a column is called a cell. And they are referenced By the letter of the column. Find the number of the row. So this cell right here would be called B2. And what is this right here? That's D4 And the whole purpose of a spreadsheet is to do calculations. So we could just type something. Such as =4 + 7. You'll see the result appears instead of what you type. If you click on it you will see what you typed in the formula bar. And we use + for addition, We use - for subtraction. The asterisk or star: * is multiplication. And a slash / is for division. Instead of using constants like 4 and 7. The real power of a spreadsheet is to put values in these cells. Suppose we Paid a $1.25 And we bought five of something. What I would type here is = (equal) And then I want to multiply these two values to find The total cost. But I don't type 1.25 times 5. This point after typing the equal I click here, Can I type the times: * And then I click here in B2. And you can see it's highlighted the cells that I am multiplying. And we see the results 6.25 and if I go up here, it shows me you can see that's in blue. Is A2 * B2 which is shown in red. But the nice thing is, let's say, I decide I need seven of them instead and I change this to a 7. The value here in cell C2. Which is the formula. Automatically updates also. And I always suggest if you're learning new software, Take time to explore the menu, look at all of the things that you have choices of, look at help. There's some tutorials in help. This is just to get you started, be sure to watch the next lesson When I show you how to plan a budget.
